  1. Register for a Google Account, if you do not have one already. You will be using your google account with a multitude of online applications throughout the course.
  2. Once you have a google account you should be able to sign in to google docs and blogger, which will be used extensively throughout the course. Start playing with them a bit to see what you can learn on your own! Check out my own class website, HipHughes History
  3. Fill out the online survey.
  4. Obtain a copy of Howard Zinn's, "A People's History of the United States."
  5. Begin to skim through the Foreman textbook. Choose a few topics to concentrate on as you will be using the Chapter to springboard into your lecture assignment.
  6. Post a biographical sketch on the discussion board on UBLearns. (The discussion Board will be up and running by the Wednesday)
  7. Respond to discussion board regarding lecturing. Using the reading (Attached Article), your own experiences being lectures to and your perspective and experiences as a teacher to address the following points. (Because we have two weeks, it is my hope that we will spend the first week, toying with our ideas about lecturing and next week people will start posting videos for lots of feedback. So 6 posts in total for everyone)
  • What place do you see "the lecture" having in a 21st century social studies classroom?
  • What were your experiences with different styles of teacher lectures throughout your educational career?
  • What are your own capacities as a lecturer in the social studies?
  • What makes a good lecture vs. a bad one?
  • Post a link to a video of what you consider a good or bad lecture. Explain why.
I encourage to play around with google docs and blogger. You will not break them, even the most mundane "playing around" will be beneficial as we take you through them next class. Please fell free to contact me if you have any questions!
